Uttarakhand is basically divided into two parts Garhwalis and Kumoanis. This land is called the “Devbhoomi“. The state have very rich culture and authenticity in music and dance, wearing jewellery is the most integral part for the women’s in Uttarakhand. There different population have different attire. Thus the state of Uttarakhand have a large variations in their attire.

Garhwal traditional dress.

In the region of Garhwal women usually wear a sari tied in a particular way were the Pallu going from the from is knotted on the shoulder with a Waistband made of cloth, the saree is wore with a full sleeves Angara (Blouse). They love accessorizing themselves thus they wear Hansuli (nose ring) worn on the neck, Golabandh (Neck Choker), black beads and silver necklaces are called Chareau, completing their attire with various silver ornaments consisting of Dhagula (bracelet) and Bichuye (toe ring).

Men’s traditional attire consist of kurta-pyjama and kurta-churidaar depending on the age and is paired with topi or Pagadi.

In marriages yellow coloured dhoti and kurta and is still the preferred attire for the groom’s.

The southern region of Uttarakhand is called Kumaoni and there traditional attire is Shirt and Ghagra for women’s which closely resembles the dress which is wore by the Rajasthani’s. The women there wear Pichoras for the wedding which is dyed in yellow color. Their married women’s wear big Nath’s the size of the nath is so big that they cover the entire cheek, and other jewellery wore by the women there are similar to the Garhwalis.

Traditional attire of Tribal Communities.

Lately in 2001, it was discovered that Uttarakhand is home for the five tribes mainly Tharu, Jaunsari, Buksa and Bhotia.

Jaunsari’s claim themselves as the descendants of Pandavas from Mahabharat. Thus, they have colorful clothing and involves lots of Jewellery making them look different from the neighbouring Garhwali Community. Women there wear Ghagra, Woollen Coats and Dhantu(Scarf).

Bhotia Community stays at the highest altitude of the state where the temperature is harsh. Thus, they weave woollen yarn and stitch their woollen clothes from those yarns. The traditional dress is very simple and comprises of shirt, skirt, waistcoat and coat. The ears, nose and neck are adorned with bead, Rings and Nose rings.

The men their typically wear Trousers and over it loose gown tied around the waist made up from woollen cloth called patta.
